Net Neutrality: The Economist weighs in →
The final take away is that these new rules are a mixed bag. The decisions about how they are implemented will play out in the court system.
“After the vote in favour, a relieved White House hurriedly declared victory—calling the outcome a great plus for innovation, job creation and the American people. It was, of course, no such thing.”
Hang on, Julian.
Julian Assange is unhappy about his police files being leaked. I mean, this is too easy, right? JOKES.
AND he refers to himself in the third person. Excerpt below. Read more here.
Speaking from the English mansion where he is confined on bail, the 39-year-old Australian said that the decision to publish incriminating police files about him was “disgusting”. The Guardian had...

Architecture.
I recommend the “fictions” series. Apparently he created these images using cardboard or computer models, then hunted down “materials” to photoshop onto photos of the models. It’s challenging to the mind and value system.

Arsenic-loving bacteria may help in hunt for alien... →
Whoa, nelly. This sounds serious.
“The first organism able to substitute one of the six chemical elements crucial to life has been found.
The bacterium, found in a California lake, uses the usually poisonous element arsenic in place of phosphorus.
The find, described in Science, gives weight to the long-standing idea that life on other planets may have a radically different chemical...

After realizing that boring old intersections actually contribute to gridlock, the Georgia Department of Transportation has decided to try some bold new designs sure to speed people driving by themselves to the nearest strip mall.
We’re also getting some new school continuous flow lanes and some old school roundabouts. I know we’re all going to spend...

Wilco Coffee Is a Real Thing →
This seems wrong.
“The band have hooked up with Chicago coffee makers Intelligentsia for a special ‘Wilco Selection’ bag of beans that is currently available to pre-order at their website. (Via Spinner.)”
Lessons of Hate at Islamic Schools in Britain →
“One of the textbooks, according to the BBC program, prescribed execution as the penalty for gay sex, and outlined differing viewpoints as to whether death should be by stoning, immolation by fire or throwing offenders off a cliff.”
Thanks, extremists, for my morning dose of outrage.
Another effort to make money off Elliott Smith →
That’s a pretty cynical view, I suppose. He’s one of my all time favorites. The label describes it this way:
“An Introduction to… is, as the title suggests, intended as an introduction to one of the greatest songwriters of our era. We hope this will enable new generations to learn about Elliott’s music by providing a pathway for people to delve more deeply into his...

Is it just me, or is it too soon to have a Joanna Newsom cover album?
New 2-Disc Set from the Boss - Pitchfork.com →
22 previously unreleased tracks from the time when the Boss was recording Darkness on the Edge of Town. Darkness is a great record, and I imagine none of these songs will disappoint either - unless you just don’t like the Boss.
“Indeed, it’s striking just how different Darkness is from its predecessor in tone and theme. Where Born to Run was about drama, with a sense of bombast...

But NBC is moving it all the way to 10. Late.
Chuck Rangel is funny →
Congress is funny, especially the House. This is my favorite quote from the article:
“Rules are so flexible, and enforcement so lax, that even instances that look like outright influence-buying don’t get prosecuted. And there’s no sign that the situation will improve, as key figures make noises about abolishing the new Office of Congressional Ethics, a semi-independent body...

George Will: Robert Weissenstein’s Exhilaration -... →
“Three million iPods were sold in 2.5 years; 3 million Kindles were sold in two years; 3 million iPads were sold in 80 days; 3 million iPhones were sold in three weeks. What exhilarates Weissenstein is the certainty that there will always be a next new thing, and that it will not be new for long.”

“Scientists say juggling e-mail, phone calls and other incoming information can change how people think and behave. They say our ability to focus is being undermined by bursts of information.”
Oh, so that’s what’s wrong with me. Phew.
Thanks to Elizabeth for bringing this to my attention.

Um,
“If you were a cop and came across 30 unmarked box trucks gathered in a remote industrial corner of Brooklyn, who would you interrogate first — the folks bent over bowls in a mini ramen noodle house, the mourners in the funeral truck or the screaming masses taking turns shooting paintballs at someone in a chicken outfit?”

The Problem with Elena Kagan →
Peter Beinart, former editor of The New Republic, argues that - though Kagan should be confirmed - she should apologize for her stance on banning ROTC from Harvard Law School while serving as Dean.
“The Kagan roll-out has been methodical too. For weeks now, it has been clear that her greatest vulnerability is her opposition, as Harvard dean, to amending the school’s anti-discrimination...
Why School Choice Matters Most - NYTimes.com →
In keeping with my recent spate of posts concerning school choice issues, Charles Murray offers an op-ed making a slightly less conventional argument in favor of charter schools and vouchers - one actually based off the notion that school choice often doesn’t result in better test scores. It’s worth a look for anyone interested in either side of the issue.
